Kissed By a Bird by LauraTringaliHolmes Kissed By a Bird by LauraTringaliHolmes
Glued collage, four layers, the theory being that the endorphins generated by beauty can make even a soldier avoid his large boots. I suggest full view to get the boots thing.
---
5 x 7. Patterened papers, acrylics, dye inks. Lots of glue. Image transfer worked on a vintage photo courtesy of Mrsinman.

This one is a packing-tape transparency. There are lots of ways to make transparencies, but this type is the quickest/most foolproof. Note me if you need a quick overview.

I think that a lot of people would find the image slightly humorous, given his grimace - perhaps just to relieve themselves and to tell themselves that everything is in order, they can sleep at night.

I don't rightly know. My initial sensation was that of some forgotten level of existence, some form of animism and contagion magic. Perhaps people whisper about those 'who have been kissed by birds', and who have gone through certain changes afterwards. Perhaps the image and the grimace are reflections of his psyche, or some slowly fleeting memory on a sunny day, while he sits by a meadow, hazy from all the light and thin mist rising from the vegetation. Perhaps, just sometimes, someone walking through the rarely visited forests outside the village sees him sitting there, in his favourite place.

You have a large part of it, actually, although people see different things, and I can even see different things depending on my mood when I look at something I've made.
But this one originally came together on the table as a piece about nature as anodyne.
His dress is that of a military man, which I chose to downplay in favor of the warning to avoid large boots that runs just under his right ear.
People who come home from wars suffer and have a lot to work through, and the boots symbolized that for me at the time.
I loved your comment.

Isn't that the best photo? A laughing person is so rare for that period, and him a soldier, too!

There are some people who seem to be able to entertain themselves and their laughing is very infectious. My partner was like this. I could not help but laugh with him, even if what he said was not really all that funny! I think this image reminds me of these times!

Oh, thank you so much! I just kind of go with the spirit of the day. I must admit, using transfer techniques is my favorite thing, though I don't do much of the solvent transfers in the summer because of my allergies.

Well, it really works well all the time! Your 'spirit of the day' must be a lot stronger then mine. ^^

I just sit down and see what catches my eye. Sometimes the spirit is weaker than at other times, but that's life, and then I go have more coffee! ;)

Many I purchase at flea markets and junk sales. Others I find from collectors of vintage photos who are kind enough to share their images. There are stock resources right here at dA, but for some reason I tend to hang out at Flickr.

I search for "vintage" and "copyright-free photos." If you add "women" or "men" etc. to "vintage" you will narrow the search to those groups. Try again!

I love the man in this image. What an unusual pose for a vintage picture, great find! It's beautifully layered, beautifully composed and colored. How did you layer the butterrflies translucently over the text? Image transfers as well?

Yes, the photo is a vintage cabinet card. The man is a soldier. It is so unusual to find facial expression in photos of those times, and to find this type of laughter--whoa!
