Bird 3 -- Dive by LauraTringaliHolmes Bird 3 -- Dive by LauraTringaliHolmes
Glued collage 4" x 6"
---
Papers, vintage drawing, hair-net wrapper, 1926 advertisement, book snip, dye inks, acrylic gloss, vinyl bird
---
Down in the comment stream, there's a note asking for the story of the collage, and pointing out that the gold vinyl bird has the shape of the lady's wing. I explained the story in the stream, but am repeating it here in case anybody is interested. Beware! It's a long explanation!

Yes, that's right about the bird being the lady's wings. I had the lady diving away from her background/societal expectations/family expectations, which are symbolized by the cage dress form with the little nest in it, into the unknown waves. The golden bird wing would keep her aloft but then there was the question of what she was diving into. The words in the long strip indicate her motivation and that she had a "plan." But then the net part raised the question--is her net a "real human" net of people or a mesh net of virtual interactions? The little square box, which is an old advertisement for a lamp actually, represents the "really new" internet.

A very delicately constructed collage. That bird cage dress is a fine symbol for the cage or corset around all of us, and I find this girl's diving away rather empowering. :) Compositionwise, I would feel more comfortable if there was some other bit of color in the bottom right quarter, but by your description, it seems as if this emptiness is the symbol of the unknown waters our heroine is diving into. :) Otherwise, nicely done. I appreciate that little segment that says, "fine mess" too!

Appreciate what you're saying about the color. Never got quite right with it. At first there was nothing, then I made a stamp of a bit of paper and did those wavy lines. I decided to go conservative, picking up the butterfly browns in the other corners. But it never felt resolved to me, either.

I did see and appreciate the butterflies, and was going to note them. Slipped my mind in the end, I guess. =P Some pieces choose to make themselves unresolved. Maybe years later you'll figure out what was missing! :)

It was time to move on from it, that much I knew. I suspect you are right about time being on my side. I eventually do manage to figure out the missing pieces...though it seems to take a really really long time.

But it's totally worth the wait. The Mona Lisa took eleven years to finish. So when can anything be finished for sure? Process process! :)

I get many of the photos from flea markets and from kind folks who collect vintage photos and then lend them out to others to use. This particular picture is a drawing from one of those Dover copyright-free books. Once I had the photo, I did an image transfer, which is why you can see through the lady. I'm happy you like it. I have one more Bird collage to do, and then I am all out of golden vinyl birds, alas.

I love your explanation of your thoughts behind this... before i read it, at first glance what i got was that she was between the devil & the deep blue sea ... Everything behind her was pushing her forward and if she goes forward the words are shaped like a spear that will go right thru her.

You got the spear part right! I wasn't going to mention the story, but then I was asked by a commentor. I figured others might be wondering, too.

Ready for adventure. Maybe she's looking down into the waves, but she seems to be looking at that nest one last time. Excellent job.

The collage is so beautiful and feminine. But the dive seems dangerous. Maybe that bird will pull her back and save her. :flowerpot:

In the back of my mind, while making this, I did feel some danger. My question was about the (real human) net. Would it be strong enough to hold her?

About to make the dive into being a real human, or into a fine mess, and is she working with or without a net, oh, the mind reels at the extent of the word/image play here!
